Vacation 2013~ Day Five/Big Horn National Forrest

Big Horn National Forest

  • Did you know the Big Horn Mountains are a sister range of the Rocky Mountains?
  • Did you know they are located halfway between Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park?
  • Did you know Big Horn National Forest has over 1 million acres of national forest and is one of our oldest national forest?
Located in north-central Wyoming, the Bighorn Mountains are a sister range of the Rocky Mountains. Conveniently located halfway between Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park, the Bighorns are a great vacation destination in themselves. No region in Wyoming is provided with a more diverse landscape - from lush grasslands to alpine meadows, from crystal-clear lakes to glacially-carved valleys, from rolling hills to sheer mountain walls. The Bighorn National Forest is filled with special places. With over 1 million acres of national forest.
This was a hidden treasure we found.  Seriously it is as beautiful as Yellowstone was.  We took the Big Horn Scenic Highway and it definitely lived up to the name.  As I was taking pictures of the scenery, Todd asked if I wanted us to pull over, I answered quickly yes please!  Luck be with us we stopped at Shell Falls, which is one of the main attractions of the Big Horn National Forest.  Shell Canyon is named for the shell fossils found in the sedimentary canyon walls.

Emily mentioned she felt so small in this beautiful part of the country.

They had a little area for humming birds.

This kid... I think he wants to cause heart failure for me.

The picture below, look in the center.
You can see another waterfall in the far distance.

I think this photo below, is one of my favorites!
He can be a little bugger sometimes.

This little stop was so worth it.  Truly beautiful!!
