Happy List ~ Independence Day Weekend

My Independence Day Weekend was all over there but in the end enjoyable.  On Friday, both Todd and I did not have to work.  We spent the day with Todd's Mom because her birthday is July 3.  Connie was very happy with our decision to be with her the entire day.  We took her to lunch, she showed us how Davenport was changing.  We crossed the Mississippi into Rock Island and went to one of her favorite Casinos.  She won over $200.  I won $5.42 and Todd won over $60 the hour we were there.  His sister stopped over after work and I do not think Connie could have received a better gift than to spend time with both of her children.  We ended up not going to see Loverboy.  Coralville has a huge festival for the 4th of July, parade, carnivals for three days and a free concert to the public and this year it was Loverboy.  Originally I was excited to see the band from my childhood days.  I thought they were an okay band but my sister and one of my best friends were so in love with Mike Reno and I heard their albums so many times.  I just loved going down memory lane.  However, sticking around to be with Connie meant giving up Loverboy and family is worth giving up an 80's band free concert.

Saturday was our day to watch Taj and we had planned to take him to the parade.  We were so surprised when he came up the stairs that morning.  His day care was closed the day prior and he spent the day with his other grandparents and they went to the park.  Taj was on a merry-go-round and his other grandpa was spinning it was a little too fast.  Taj let go and went flying.

Our poor little guy's eye was nearly swollen shut at the beginning of the day, but it is always worse the following day of the accident.  We sat at what I think was probably the most unorganized parade in the entire world EVER.  Unfortunately we were at the end of the parade, the flags and grand marshal came and we thought finally we are going to see the parade.  However we waited another 15 minutes for the cars who had the queens and then waited another 15 minutes before the first float.  It took nearly two hours for this very small parade with huge gaps in between.  Here are a few pictures of the favorites though.

After the parade we took Taj to the playground.  He wanted nothing to do with the merry-go-round.  Who can blame him?  However he did have a lot of fun with Papa.

I love the one above.  Taj was looking everywhere for Todd umm Papa.  I was laughing so hard.  You can see Taj over by the right side on top. Papa, you can see his legs sticking out of the tube slide on the left side of the equipment.

After dinner we headed downtown and attended the Jazz Festival Iowa City has every year.  I loved listening to the jazz bands.  Taj insisted on jumping in the bounce house but we were so afraid for him but he did have one round of jumping.  Kera kept reminding him of his face.  We found the best spot next to the old capital to see the fireworks.  Iowa City had a great show.   Taj would throw up his hands and tell us he was creating magic.  I was not sure where to set my eyes, on the show in the sky or the show on the ground in front of me.

Sundays are one of my favorite days of the week.  Most of the children come over for dinner and we typically play games.  This past Sunday we did not do any games but made a bon fire, sparklers, and smores.

We told spooky stories, well spooky enough for Taj and he shared one too.

Taj's Spooky Story
Taj:  whisper whisper
Nana: "I can't hear you."
Taj: "There were some big eyes." "*mumbles* and it was going to wind."  "Oh wait a minute.  Once upon a time, Colton and I and you and me." pause "One second."(insert giggles from Kera and I) "Colton and I and Taj and Mom were out in the woods. I saw big eyes and another big eyes."
Matthew: "Oh No!"
Taj: "We saw um a monster that was over there and he was coming at me and he and and and and the creature died over there.  And a creature kid and his Mom went out in the woods and died down there by the tree and they got sharp eyes and they got the monster. RAWR!"
Everyone but Taj: "Woah!"
Papa: "Woah that was so scary."
Kera: "Oh that was so scary."
Nana: "Oh my goodness."
Taj: "And and he said rawr."
Papa: "And then he said Dinoco Blue!"
Taj: "And.."
Noah:"ROAR!"
Taj: "Whaaaa. don't."
Everyone giggles.

I hope you all had a wonderful Independence weekend too. What makes you happy?

    1. Thanks Mimi. I am okay with missing Loverboy for family, now if it were Paul McCartney that would be a horse of a different color. LOL Plus I do not think the city of Coralville could afford for him to perform free. Thanks, I do feel blessed. I hope you have a wonderful week.

  2. Poor Taj! He seems to have made a quick recovery, though. And what a nightmare for the parade- 2 hours is an awfully long time to wait in the heat, standing up, for a small parade. They should take some tips from the other parades you've seen in your explorations this summer. ;)

  3. This is such a fun blog post, Jolene. Oh my, what a sore eye! Love the photo of Taj looking for your hubby on the playground! And the smores and the spooky story - so cute! I wouldn't be able to get my husband to a parade due to all the people and waiting around. We rode our bikes to where the kids in our neighborhood had decorated their bikes for a parade but everyone was standing around too long and we didn't stay for the parade. LOL The bikes were cute though. I have to tell you that we play Words with Friends alot and when I get the letter J, I use the word taj often!
